ABOUT:
Please help finish a documentary that was shot in the trenches during one of the greatest grassroots political movements in recent U.S. history. You will put a face on those working to change America and the forces they are up against. Dean and Me is an unbiased historical archive for all of us who cherish “people-powered” political action and wonder how it began and where it’s headed.
Dean and Me started in 2002 when director Heath Eiden felt the need to do something about the right wing’s cynical exploitation of 9/11. He started a documentary about Howard Dean, feeling the straight-talking outsider was the right person to stop the bleeding should he run for president.
Dean’s cooperation began with a video blog, DeanTV.org. Eiden started it with raw documentary footage he shot following Dean around local Vermont. The aim was to help frame the candidate honestly before the mainstream media demonized him. A “Citizen Journalist,” Eiden made up some credentials and hit the road for Howard with his cameras as the loan DeanTV correspondent, in contact with co-producer Deanna Kamiel via phone and email.
As it turns out, donating video to the campaign and video blogging didn’t win Dean the nomination. However, it connected to a revolutionary grassroots effort that changed politics and jump-started a national debate at a time when American democracy was, and remains, fragile. Eiden’s ultimate discovery was that the real story about Dean and the movement he inspired took place well outside the closed theater of American media politics.
